Movie Review: Peppermint

The problem with the new movie "Peppermint" starts with the log-line. "A married woman loses her daughter and husband in a drive by shooting and after not getting justice, she goes away for 5 years and on the anniversary of their murders goes on a rampage for revenge". Of course this is an idiotic idea even if they explain how a woman like this could go away somewhere and get top notch training in hand to hand combat and using advanced military weapons. This entire bad idea for a movie would work better if they showed or even mentioned some of her advanced training that made her a super hero, but none of this happened in this movie. We are all expected to believe that a woman like this can kill an entire drug cartel using hand to hand combat, knives, guns and explosives. You're kidding right?

The other problem with this movie is that its just another Death Wish revenge idea that we have all seen way too many times. There is nothing really new here so any opportunity for a different idea for the Death Wish genre was lost. I was surprised that Jennifer Garner took this role, especially because for the last 10 years of her movie career she has never been in any kind of a violent role like this. Perhaps her recent divorce from Ben Affleck had something to do with this career decision, which ultimately was a bad one.

The Rotten Tomatoes rating for Peppermint (the title taken from her daughters favorite ice cream - another bad idea) was a very low 14%. I would give this movie about a 25% and for this reason I do not recommend this film.
