Movie Review: Godzilla Minus One

In the history of movies, there have been 37 Godzilla movies, 33 of them from Japan and the other 4 from the United States. The franchise is now almost 70 years old with the first movie “Godzilla” released on November 3, 1954. The latest version, “Godzilla Minus One” is from Japan with subtitles.

Given the advances in movie technology over 70 years, the special effects of this latest release are at times awe-inspiring, although the actual Godzilla monster seems to not have changed at all in all these years. One additional ability I have not seen before is the ability of Godzilla to light up its spine and then roar out a nuclear ray.

Unfortunately for this movie, there is too much dialogue and not enough Godzilla action scenes. There were also not enough new ideas, to make this latest Godzilla movie a standout over any of the many others.

I was surprised at the very high 98% ratings for this film on Rotten Tomatoes, with my rating about 75% and only a marginal recommendation.
